So I come home around 9 pm to a garage door that will not open. I try several times. I get out of the car to use the old fashioned key to let myself in the front door and there's my roommate pulling up to the drive way. I say the garage door opener isn't working and he says "well duh! The power is out. The whole block or more". Well seeing as I was in my own little world I didn't notice the neighbors also didn't have power. I did notice when I was outside the car that the people across the street had power. (not fair!)
So now we are in the house no power. What to do? He found a candle and was blindly feeling around a cabinet and I whipped out my flashlight app on my new smart phone (yes for all of you who knew I had a dumb phone it's finally been replaced). What did we do before apps? Before flashlight apps?! As far as I knew we didn't have any flashlights around and even if we did we didn't have batteries for them.
I have lots of candles but needed the app to help me find them; to clear a spot where they wont burn the place down; and to light them. I wanted a variety of candles to help light up my room plus my bathroom. The app was only going to last as long as the battery on the phone so it wasn't going to be my source of light all night if we needed it. I had a few tapered candles on candlesticks that I had gotten when I traveled to the mystical town Tzvat, Israel. This was the perfect time to use them (not sure what I was waiting for its been about 6 years since I was there last). Because of it's height it gave a nice glow to the room.
It's now 1030 pm and we finally have power. I am sad to blow all the candles out but it's probably better not to fall asleep with them burning. If the power hadn't gone back on when it did I would have had to sit in my car and charge my phone so it would be able to be my alarm clock in the morning. Crisis averted!
So what lessons did I learn? Hmmm be aware of your surroundings; have a plan; and have an app!
Thanks for reading my silliness!
Good night
